SEC Media Days Kick Off with Praise for Newcomers Texas and Oklahoma
SEC Media Day 2023--

DALLAS — The SEC Media Days began on a high note Monday morning, with conference commissioner Greg Sankey delivering a compelling opening address. Before Sankey spoke, the stage featured the iconic Texas Longhorns helmet, setting the scene for his enthusiastic remarks about the conference's newest additions.

Sankey highlighted the significance of Texas and Oklahoma joining the SEC, offering particular praise for the Longhorns.

"We are a big part of Texas. Texas is a big part of us now," he said, underscoring the mutual importance of the partnership.

The commissioner also touched on the broader impact of college football in America, especially during challenging times.

"On Saturdays in this country, decade after decade, people come together," he noted, pointing to the sport's ability to unite communities.

The Longhorns celebrated their SEC entry with a campus-wide event that included fans, players, coaches, and athletic director Chris Del Conte. This move from the Big 12 is part of a more extensive realignment across college football ahead of the 2024 season. With Texas and Oklahoma now in the fold, the SEC encompasses 16 athletic programs.

"Sixteen is our today, and 16 is our tomorrow," Sankey declared, emphasizing the conference's enduring strength and stability.

During the kickoff of SEC Media Days, Sankey firmly dismissed any speculation about expanding beyond the current 16 teams. Despite being pressed by three reporters, he shot down each question, reiterating his commitment to the existing structure.

As a dominant force in college football, the SEC often competes closely with the Big Ten. Sankey, who prides himself on managing a top-tier conference, shared his vision for the future of college athletics.

"It's time to update your expectations for what college athletics can be," he asserted.

The warm reception for Texas and Oklahoma signals a new chapter for the SEC, promising thrilling developments and heightened competition in the upcoming seasons.
